The Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden

The Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden

Long ago, a kind-hearted woodcutter lived in a small mountain village.

He was poor, but he was hardworking.

Every morning, he climbed the mountain to gather firewood.

Every evening, he returned home carrying a heavy bundle of wood.

One day, the woodcutter became lost deep in the mountains.

The sun was setting, but he could not find the way home.

“Will I have to spend the night here?”

    Just then, a deer appeared.

The deer stopped in front of him and kept looking toward the forest.

“Do you want me to follow you?”

The deer walked a few steps, then turned around and looked at him again.

    The woodcutter decided to follow.

After a while, the deer disappeared between the trees.

There was a beautiful, clear pond hidden in the forest.

White mist floated above the water.

    The woodcutter suddenly stopped.

Beautiful clothes were lying beside the pond.

Then he saw several women descending from the sky and playing in the water.

    “Who are they?”

The woodcutter hid behind a tree and watched.

They were heavenly maidens who had come down from the sky.

They laughed and played in the water.

The woodcutter noticed their beautiful winged clothes lying beside the pond.

The deer came closer and looked at the clothes.

Then it looked at the woodcutter.

The woodcutter wondered whether the deer was trying to tell him something.

    But he thought to himself,

“I should never take something that belongs to someone else.”

So he did not touch the clothes.

Instead, he quietly moved away from the pond.

The heavenly maidens finished bathing and put on their winged clothes.

Then they flew back into the sky.

That night, the woodcutter eventually found his way home.

The next morning, he returned to the mountain.

    The same deer appeared again.

It led him back to the pond.

This time, one heavenly maiden was still there.

    She was searching for something.

    “Where is my winged dress?”

    The woodcutter carefully approached her.

    “Are you looking for this?”

He handed her the winged dress he had found.

The maiden looked at him in surprise.

    “You had this?”

“No. I found it here yesterday, but I thought it would be wrong to take something that belonged to you. So I kept it safe.”

    The maiden smiled gratefully.

“You are a very honest man.”

As a gift, she gave him a small silk pouch.

“Take this. It may help you someday.”

When the woodcutter returned home, he opened the pouch.

    Inside were several tiny seeds.

The next morning, he planted them in his yard.

A few days later, small green shoots appeared.

They grew quickly and soon beautiful flowers bloomed.

The flowers had a wonderful fragrance.

People from the village came to see them.

The woodcutter shared the flower seeds with everyone.

The villagers planted them and shared new seeds with their neighbors.

Soon, beautiful flower gardens appeared throughout the village.

The heavenly maiden watched from the sky.

She remembered the woodcutter’s kindness and honesty.

Then one year, a terrible drought came.

    The fields became dry.

    The villagers were worried.

The woodcutter looked at his own field and sighed.

That night, he had a strange dream.

The heavenly maiden appeared before him.

“The flower seeds you shared have brought the hearts of the villagers together.”

    “What do you mean?”

The maiden pointed toward the mountains.

“Tomorrow, ask the villagers to climb the mountain together.”

The next morning, the woodcutter told everyone about his dream.

At first, the villagers did not believe him.

But eventually, they decided to go together.

Deep in the mountain, they discovered a small spring.

It had been hidden behind a huge old rock.

The villagers worked together to move the rock.

    Clear water began to flow.

The water formed a small stream that eventually reached the village.

The villagers guided the water toward their fields.

Soon, water began returning to the dry rice paddies.

    Everyone was delighted.

“We made this happen because we worked together!”

The woodcutter looked toward the sky.

For a moment, he thought he saw the heavenly maiden smiling between the clouds.

As the years passed, the woodcutter became one of the most trusted people in the village.

Whenever someone had a problem, they came to him.

    He always told them,

“A single person may struggle with even a small problem, but when people trust and help one another, they can overcome great difficulties.”

One spring day, the woodcutter returned to the pond.

The water was still clear and peaceful.

He sat beside the pond and looked up at the sky.

“Heavenly Maiden, I hope you are well.”

Just then, a small flower petal floated down from the sky.

The woodcutter caught it in his hand.

    He smiled.

He understood that sincere kindness does not simply disappear.

It remains in someone’s heart for a long time.

From that day on, whenever the woodcutter visited the pond, he shared flower seeds with the villagers.

The flowers bloomed year after year.

And whenever people saw those flowers, they reminded one another,

“Even a small act of kindness can create a beautiful connection.”

    Moral of the Story

Honesty and kindness may not bring immediate rewards, but they can eventually return as happiness, trust, and meaningful relationships.

And when people stop trying to solve everything alone and work together, even great difficulties can be overcome.

The Red Bean Porridge Grandma and the Tiger

    English Version

The Red Bean Porridge Grandma and the Tiger

Long ago, there was a small thatched house deep in the mountains.

An old grandmother lived there alone.

She worked hard throughout the year.

In spring, she prepared her fields.

In summer, she gathered wild vegetables.

    In autumn, she harvested crops.

Her favorite food was warm red bean porridge.

“A bowl of warm porridge can make even the coldest winter feel less frightening.”

Whenever winter approached, she carefully washed red beans and stored them in a large jar.

One late autumn day, the grandmother met a large tiger on a mountain path.

    The tiger blocked her way.

“Grandmother,” the tiger said in a deep voice.

“I am going to eat you tonight.”

The grandmother was frightened, but she tried not to show it.

    “Must it be tonight?”

    “Yes. It must be tonight.”

    The grandmother thought carefully.

“Then let me go home and cook one last bowl of red bean porridge. After winter begins, you may come and eat me.”

    The tiger thought about it.

“Red bean porridge first? Perhaps I will enjoy the meal even more afterward.”

    So the tiger agreed.

“Fine. I will wait until tonight.”

    The grandmother hurried home.

As soon as she closed the door, she sighed.

“What am I going to do?”

She washed the beans and put them into a large pot.

She lit the fire and began cooking.

Soon, the warm and delicious smell of red bean porridge filled the house.

Then she heard a small voice outside.

    “Grandmother, why are you crying?”

    The grandmother opened the door.

A large millstone was sitting outside.

“I am going to be eaten by a tiger tonight after I finish making this porridge.”

    The millstone answered,

“Do not worry. I will help you.”

    “How can you help me?”

“I will roll in front of the tiger and block his path.”

    The grandmother thanked the millstone.

Then another voice came from outside.

“Grandmother, I will help you too.”

    It was a straw mat.

“I will trip the tiger when he comes.”

Soon, a mortar, a wooden carrier, and a turtle also arrived.

Each promised to help the grandmother in its own way.

The grandmother wiped away her tears and smiled.

“I thought I was alone, but I have so many friends.”

    Night fell.

The red bean porridge was bubbling in the pot.

The tiger came down from the mountain.

    “Grandmother! Is the porridge ready?”

Just as the tiger tried to enter the house, the millstone rolled toward him.

    “Rumble, rumble!”

    The tiger jumped backward.

    “What is that?”

Then the straw mat slid beneath his feet.

The tiger lost his balance and fell.

    “Ah!”

The mortar rolled toward him and blocked his path.

The wooden carrier fell across the path as well.

    The tiger became furious.

    “How dare you stop me?”

    Then the turtle appeared.

It grabbed the tiger’s tail tightly.

    “Ouch!”

    The tiger jumped in surprise.

The grandmother quickly closed and locked the door.

The tiger ran away into the mountains.

That night, the grandmother was safe.

The next morning, she served warm red bean porridge to all her friends.

“Thank you. You saved my life.”

    The millstone smiled.

“You have always been kind to us.”

    The mortar added,

    “No one truly lives alone.”

    The grandmother smiled quietly.

From that day on, whenever she went to the village, she shared her red bean porridge with her neighbors.

“Come and eat. It tastes best while it is warm.”

Winter arrived, but the grandmother’s house was always filled with visitors.

    Someone brought firewood.

    Someone brought side dishes.

Children came to listen to her stories.

    Then the grandmother realized something.

She had always thought that all she owned was a small house and a few bags of beans.

But she actually had something much more valuable.

She had neighbors and friends who would laugh and cry with her.

One winter night, while she was cooking red bean porridge, she heard a tiger roaring outside.

    “Roar!”

The grandmother was startled for a moment.

    Then she smiled.

    “I am not afraid anymore.”

Her neighbors and animal friends were all beside her.

Far away in the mountains, the tiger also began to think.

He realized that being strong did not mean that he could take everything he wanted.

From that day on, he decided never to frighten people who lived alone.

People in the village later began sharing red bean porridge together whenever winter arrived.

As they shared warm bowls of porridge, they often said,

“Even the coldest winter can be warm when we are together.”

    Moral of the Story

A small strength may seem powerless when we are alone, but many small strengths can become powerful when they come together.

And a small act of kindness given today may return as great help when we need it most.

The Honest Woodcutter and the Golden Axe

    English Version

The Honest Woodcutter and the Golden Axe

Long ago, a woodcutter lived in a small mountain village.

    His name was Dubok.

Dubok was not wealthy, but he was hardworking and honest.

Every morning, he climbed the mountain to gather firewood.

Before sunset, he returned to the village carrying a heavy bundle of wood.

His only possessions were a small thatched house and an old axe.

The axe had belonged to his father.

    Dubok treasured it very much.

“If I lose this axe, it will be difficult for my family to survive the winter.”

After every day’s work, he cleaned the blade carefully and placed the axe inside a wooden box.

One morning, Dubok went deeper into the mountain than usual.

It had rained for several days, and firewood had become difficult to find.

    He discovered a large tree.

“I should cut this tree today.”

He raised his axe and struck the tree.

    Bang!

    He struck it again.

But on the third swing, the axe slipped from his hand.

    “Oh!”

The axe fell directly into a deep pond.

    Dubok was shocked.

The pond was much deeper than he had expected.

He sat beside the water and sighed.

“This is terrible. I cannot work without my axe.”

    He looked into the water.

But he could not see his axe anywhere.

Suddenly, the water began to ripple.

An old man with a long white beard appeared from the pond.

    Dubok stood up in surprise.

    “Who are you?”

    The old man smiled.

“I am the mountain spirit who guards this pond.”

    Dubok respectfully bowed.

“Mountain Spirit, my axe fell into the pond. I would be very grateful if I could find it.”

The spirit disappeared beneath the water.

After a moment, he returned holding a shining golden axe.

    “Is this your axe?”

    Dubok shook his head.

“No. My axe is an old iron axe.”

    The spirit disappeared again.

This time, he returned holding a silver axe.

    “Then is this your axe?”

    Again, Dubok shook his head.

“No. That one is not mine either.”

Finally, the spirit returned holding an old and worn iron axe.

    Dubok’s face brightened.

    “Yes! That is my axe!”

    The mountain spirit smiled.

“You did not become greedy when you saw the golden and silver axes. Your honesty is more valuable than either of them.”

The spirit handed all three axes to Dubok.

    “Take all three.”

    Dubok was surprised.

    “Can I really have them?”

“Yes. But remember this: true treasure is not found in objects. It is found in the heart.”

Dubok thanked the spirit and returned home.

The villagers were amazed when they saw the golden and silver axes.

Soon, the story reached another woodcutter named Manseok.

Manseok worked less than Dubok but always wanted more money.

    One day, he asked Dubok,

“Is it true that you received a golden axe?”

    “Yes.”

    “How did you get it?”

    Dubok honestly told him everything.

    Manseok’s eyes began to shine.

“Then I can do the same thing and get a golden axe!”

The next day, Manseok went to the pond.

He deliberately threw his axe into the water.

“Oh, no! My axe fell into the pond!”

    Soon, the mountain spirit appeared.

    “What happened?”

    Manseok secretly smiled.

    “I lost my axe.”

The spirit went into the water.

Then he returned with a golden axe.

    “Is this your axe?”

    Manseok opened his eyes wide.

    “Yes! That is my axe!”

    The spirit’s face became serious.

    “Are you certain?”

    “Yes.”

The spirit put down the golden axe.

Then he returned with a silver axe.

    “What about this one?”

    Manseok hesitated.

    Then he answered,

    “That one is mine too.”

    The spirit shook his head.

    “Greed has hidden your honesty.”

    Manseok became nervous.

    “But…”

The spirit returned holding an old iron axe.

    “This is your real axe.”

    Manseok lowered his head.

The mountain spirit took the golden and silver axes back into the pond.

He gave Manseok only the old iron axe.

    Manseok returned home feeling ashamed.

A few days later, he visited Dubok.

    “Dubok.”

    “Yes?”

“How can you be so honest?”

    Dubok thought for a moment.

    “I was tempted too.”

    Manseok was surprised.

    “You were?”

“Of course. When I saw the golden axe, I wanted it too.”

    “Then why didn’t you lie?”

Dubok looked at his old axe.

“This axe is old, but it helped feed my family. I don’t think I would become happier by throwing away what I have just to obtain something more valuable.”

    Manseok could not answer.

From that day on, he slowly changed.

He stopped taking other people’s firewood.

He worked honestly for what he earned.

And he stopped wanting things simply because someone else had them.

One evening, Dubok came down from the mountain and found Manseok waiting for him.

    Manseok smiled.

“Now I think my own axe is the best axe.”

    Dubok smiled back.

“That is the best axe of all.”

The two men walked down the mountain together.

The sun was disappearing beyond the hills.

It is said that the mountain spirit watched them from afar and smiled.

For a person’s true value does not depend on how much treasure they possess.

It depends on how honest they can remain, even when nobody is watching.

    Moral of the Story

Honesty may not always bring immediate rewards.

But an honest person can keep the trust of others for a lifetime.

Gold and silver may shine brightly, but honesty and trust are treasures that last much longer.

Heungbu and Nolbu

    English Version

Heungbu and Nolbu — The Two Brothers and the Swallow

Long ago, two brothers named Heungbu and Nolbu lived in a small village.

They were born to the same parents, but their personalities were very different.

Nolbu, the older brother, was greedy.

Even when his storage rooms were filled with rice, he always wanted more.

Heungbu, however, did not have much.

But whenever he saw someone in need, he could never simply walk away.

After their parents passed away, Nolbu took most of the family property.

    Heungbu carefully asked his brother,

“Brother, could you give me just a little? I need to feed my children.”

    Nolbu answered coldly,

“You should take care of your own family. I must protect what belongs to me.”

Heungbu was hurt, but he did not argue.

From that day on, he lived with his wife and children in a small thatched house.

The house was small, and there was often not enough food.

But Heungbu always told his children,

“Being poor does not mean that your heart has to be poor.”

One spring day, a swallow built a nest beneath the roof of Heungbu’s house.

The children watched with excitement as the swallow laid eggs and raised its babies.

One day, however, a baby swallow fell from the nest.

One of its legs was injured.

The children brought the little bird inside.

“Father, it is hurt. Please help it.”

Heungbu found a small piece of wood and carefully supported the bird’s injured leg.

He also gave it food every day.

After several days, the swallow began to move again.

After about a month, it could fly once more.

The swallow flew around Heungbu’s house several times before disappearing into the sky.

Heungbu and the children waved goodbye.

    “Take care.”

    Winter came and passed.

The following spring, something surprising happened.

The same swallow returned to Heungbu’s house.

This time, it carried a small seed in its beak.

The swallow dropped the seed into Heungbu’s yard.

    Heungbu planted it carefully.

A few days later, a small green shoot appeared.

The plant grew larger and larger until it became a long vine covered with large gourds.

Heungbu chose one of the gourds with his children.

    “Let’s open this one.”

They carefully cut the gourd open.

    Then something amazing happened.

Gold coins, silk, rice, and precious objects poured out.

    The children shouted with joy.

    “Father! We are rich!”

Heungbu was silent for a moment.

    Then he smiled.

“This is not only for our family.”

He paid their debts and repaired their home.

With the rest of the wealth, he helped the people in the village.

He gave rice to hungry families and helped people prepare firewood for winter.

    The story soon reached Nolbu.

    Nolbu hurried to Heungbu’s house.

“How did you suddenly become rich?”

Heungbu told him everything about the swallow.

    Nolbu became greedy.

“If helping a swallow makes you rich, then I can become rich too!”

But Nolbu did not really want to help the bird.

    He only wanted the treasure.

A few days later, he found a swallow and deliberately injured it.

Then he pretended to be kind and treated the bird in front of other people.

“Look at how kind I am.”

The swallow quietly looked at him.

The following spring, the swallow brought a seed to Nolbu’s house as well.

    Nolbu eagerly planted it.

When the gourds grew, he immediately opened one.

“How much gold will be inside?”

But the moment the gourd opened, a strange sound came from inside.

    “Crash!”

A group of goblins jumped out.

    “You greedy Nolbu!”

“Where are the things you took from others?”

“Do you remember all the lies you told?”

Nolbu was terrified and ran away.

    The goblins chased him.

He ran outside the village and finally collapsed beneath a large tree.

    Then Heungbu arrived.

Nolbu could not look at his brother.

    “Heungbu…”

    “Yes, Brother.”

“Did you come here to laugh at me?”

    Heungbu shook his head.

“No. I came because I was worried about you.”

    Nolbu began to cry.

“I was jealous because you became rich. I wanted to do the same thing. But now I understand. Having many things means nothing if your heart is empty.”

    Heungbu reached out his hand.

“Then let’s live together from now on.”

Nolbu stared at his brother’s hand for a long time.

    Then he slowly took it.

    “I am sorry, Heungbu.”

From that day on, Nolbu began to change.

He returned the things he had taken from others.

He shared rice with poor families.

And he sincerely apologized to his younger brother.

As time passed, the two brothers became close again.

One autumn day, Heungbu and Nolbu planted a gourd seed together.

    Nolbu asked,

“Do you think this gourd will contain gold?”

    Heungbu smiled.

“It will be fine even if it doesn’t.”

    “Why?”

    “Because we planted it together.”

    Nolbu smiled too.

When autumn arrived, a large gourd grew in their yard.

    The brothers opened it together.

    There was no gold.

    There were no jewels.

Instead, the gourd was filled with small seeds.

    Nolbu looked puzzled.

“What kind of treasure is this?”

Heungbu placed one seed in his hand.

“Perhaps it is a treasure for next year.”

The two brothers shared the seeds with the villagers.

The following spring, gourd vines began growing throughout the village.

By autumn, large gourds hung from the vines in nearly every household.

The villagers shared food and laughed together.

    Nolbu watched them and said,

    “Heungbu.”

    “Yes?”

    “Now I finally understand.”

    “What do you understand?”

“Money and property become more valuable when they are shared with others.”

    Heungbu smiled.

    “I think so too, Brother.”

From that day on, the two brothers’ homes were filled with something more precious than gold.

They were filled with love, kindness, and consideration for one another.

    Moral of the Story

A truly rich person is not someone who owns the most, but someone who knows how to share what they have with others.

Greed can never be completely satisfied, but even a small act of kindness can bring happiness to many people.

The Brother and Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon

    English Version

The Brother and Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon

Long ago, beneath a deep and beautiful mountain, there stood a small thatched house.

A mother lived there with her two children.

The older brother was named Haedol, and his younger sister was named Dalsun.

Haedol was ten years old, and Dalsun was seven.

Their family was poor, but the two children loved each other very much.

Every morning, Haedol helped his mother by gathering firewood from the mountain, while Dalsun helped with the household chores.

In the evening, the three of them sat around a small brazier and shared a warm bowl of porridge.

    Their mother always told them,

“We may not have many things, but never lose the love we have for one another.”

    The children remembered her words.

One late autumn day, their mother prepared to go to the market.

“I need to buy a few things today. I will return before sunset.”

    Haedol smiled.

“Don’t worry, Mother. I will take good care of Dalsun.”

    Dalsun nodded.

“I will listen to my brother.”

Their mother gently touched their heads and left.

But the market was unusually crowded that day.

By the time she finished shopping, much more time had passed than she expected.

As she walked along the mountain path, she suddenly heard a strange sound behind her.

    “Grrr…”

    She stopped.

    Again, she heard it.

    “Grrr!”

A huge tiger appeared from behind a rock.

The tiger looked at her and asked,

    “Where are you going?”

The mother was frightened, but she tried to remain calm.

“I am going home to my children.”

    The tiger narrowed its eyes.

    “You have children?”

The mother could not hide the truth.

    The tiger smiled.

“Then perhaps I should visit your house too.”

The mother quickly thought of a plan.

“If you want to go there, go ahead of me. But be careful. The mountain path is dangerous.”

    The tiger ran ahead.

The mother took another path and hurried home.

Meanwhile, Haedol and Dalsun were waiting for their mother.

The sun was slowly disappearing behind the mountain.

Then they heard a voice outside the door.

    “Children, Mother is home.”

    Dalsun happily stood up.

    “Brother! Mother is back.”

But Haedol quickly took her hand.

    “Wait.”

    “Why?”

    “Her voice sounds strange.”

    The voice came again.

    “Open the door.”

Haedol carefully looked through a small crack in the door.

He saw a large shadow beneath the door.

    Then he noticed a hand.

It was far too large and covered with thick hair.

    Haedol was frightened.

    “Dalsun, that isn’t Mother.”

    “Then who is it?”

    Haedol whispered,

    “It’s a tiger.”

    The two children were terrified.

    The tiger kicked the door.

“Open the door, or I will break it down!”

    Haedol looked around the house.

Then he noticed a small window near the back door.

    “Dalsun, follow me!”

The children climbed through the window and ran toward the mountain.

The tiger soon realized that they had escaped.

    “Stop!”

The children ran as fast as they could.

    But Dalsun became exhausted.

    “Brother… I can’t run anymore.”

    Haedol held her hand tightly.

“It’s all right. I will carry you.”

He carried his little sister on his back and continued running.

After a long time, they saw a huge tree.

Haedol climbed the tree and helped Dalsun onto a strong branch.

Soon, the tiger arrived beneath the tree.

    “Where are you hiding?”

The tiger looked up and began shaking the tree.

    Dalsun started to cry.

    “Brother, I’m scared.”

    Haedol hugged her tightly.

“Don’t worry. I will protect you.”

Then Dalsun looked up at the night sky.

One small star was shining brightly.

    She whispered,

“Brother, can we ask the sky for help?”

    “For what?”

    “To save us.”

The two children folded their hands together.

    “Sky, please help us.”

    Then something amazing happened.

A bright light appeared between the clouds.

The light grew brighter and descended toward the tree.

A golden rope appeared from the sky.

    Haedol grabbed it.

    “Dalsun, hurry!”

The two children climbed the rope and began rising into the sky.

The tiger tried to grab the rope, but it was too far away.

When the children reached the sky, they met a mysterious old woman.

    She looked at them warmly.

“Even when you were frightened, you thought of each other first.”

    Haedol asked,

    “Where will we live now?”

The old woman pointed toward the sky.

“You will light the world during the day so that people will not lose their way.”

    Then she looked at Dalsun.

“And you will light the night so that lonely people will not be afraid.”

Suddenly, a brilliant light surrounded Haedol.

A gentle and warm light surrounded Dalsun.

    Haedol became the Sun.

    Dalsun became the Moon.

From that day on, the world had day and night.

The Sun brightened the world during the day.

The Moon watched over the dark roads at night.

Whenever people looked up at the sky, they remembered the love between the brother and sister.

An old story was passed down from generation to generation.

People said that when the sky turns red at sunset, the Sun is saying goodbye to the Moon.

And when the moonlight slowly fades at dawn, the Moon is giving the world to the Sun.

The two siblings could no longer meet at the same time.

But they never forgot each other.

The Sun thought of the Moon while shining during the day.

The Moon thought of the Sun while lighting the night.

    And people came to say,

“True love does not always mean being together. It means never forgetting each other, even when you are far apart.”

Even today, when the Sun sets and the Moon rises, look carefully at the sky.

Perhaps the Sun and the Moon are quietly saying hello to each other.

    Moral of the Story

Family love becomes even stronger during difficult times.

And just as it is important to receive help from others, it is also important to become someone who protects and helps others.
